Adam Sommers

Founder & Fiduciary

My passion for investing and financial planning all began in high school when my dad began to share about how he was investing for me for college. Then, after reading an article about Michael Dell beginning Dell Computer from his dorm room at the University of Texas, I began my first investment partnership as a freshman at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon - collecting investments from friends and family, and modeling my "fund" after Warren Buffet's initial partnership.

After working at an accounting software firm, and trying my hand as a full-charge accountant, I decided to leave the accounting world and begin my own financial planning and investment practice in 2002. As my business grew, I had side-hustles like teaching at local colleges, as well as selling insurance.  I was also fortunate to have a supportive wife that had a solid income and benefit package as a public school teacher.

Every day, I learn, read, listen, and find new ways to better serve our clients. And with a team that shares the same values and vision as I do, I have no doubt Sommers Financial Management will continue to grow and make a real difference in our communities. Outside of work, my wife, Teresa, and I enjoy reading, traveling, and hiking with our two children. In 2019-20, the four of us attempted to see the entire United States in our truck and 30-foot travel trailer, only to get derailed by the COVID-19 outbreak. We plan to explore those last few states in the near future - and then hope to travel internationally to experience and learn about other cultures.

If you had a million dollars to spend, what would be the first three things you would buy?
Do you mean which three ETFs? LOL

What’s the most likely place people could find you on a Saturday night?
At my friend Mark's house, playing $20 poker and drinking bourbon with a bunch of good dudes.

Which would you pick: Living on the beach or living near the mountains?
I'd love to have a house in Hawaii, but think that we are very blessed to live in Catalina Foothills area of Tucson in the winter, and near the Oregon/Washington Cascades, coast range, and beaches each summer.

Imagine being approached by a genie who offers you three wishes. What might those wishes be?

  1. To be able to eat anything and still feel/look good.
  2. For my family and I to live long, healthy lives.
  3. To be able to provide high investment returns to my clients, with zero volatility and risk.

If you had the ability to travel back in time, what’s something you would tell your 18-year-old self?
Enjoy your youth - there is plenty of time to work and make money.

My first knowledge of investing came at a young age after a tragedy in my family's life.  An insurance settlement invested in a savings bond during a time of soaring interest rates got me through college.  Then after a loan default, the investment institution went bankrupt and my nestegg was gone!   This taught me about preparing for the unexpected and it fostered my desire to teach others about investing. The lesson I still use today from that experience is not just some cliche:  "Don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Developing relationships with my clients is a great satisfaction for me.  With huge advances in technology, the endless investment options can be overwhelming.  My hope is that our clients feel confident trusting us and can recognize we are working hard on their behalf.  The strategy to "plan effectively and invest efficiently" takes away the anxiety of retirement planning.

If you had a million dollars to spend, what would be the first three things you would buy?
Well, ask me when it arrives.

Seriously though, I'd set aside half for my income in the future, seed a fourth in a Donor Advised Fund, and distribute a fourth to friends & family.

What’s the most likely place people could find you on a Saturday night?
At friends, playing a card game of Scum, and sharing a meal.

Which would you pick: Living on the beach or living near the mountains?
It's hard to take the love of mountains out of a girl born and raised in Montana, but as I get older I enjoy the cold less.  In Oregon, we have the benefit of both beaches and mountains in a fairly mild climate.

Imagine being approached by a genie who offers you three wishes. What might those wishes be?

  • Listen well
  • Live compassionately with purpose, and
  • Let go of hurts.

If you had the ability to travel back in time, what’s something you would tell your 18-year-old self?
Words are powerful, and they have consequences.

My love for numbers began at an early age. I would go to work with my mom on the weekends and she would hand me a yellow legal pad.  I would sit for hours while she worked, writing down numbers and adding them up.  I then moved up to an adding machine!  My curious mind would add, subtract, multiply and divide to my heart's content as the adding machine tape continued to grow.  I also loved typewriters - so much so, that I would sit and type letters to my family and friends for hours on end, loving the sound of the clicking of the keys.  I knew then that I was meant to work in an office.

In high school, I worked in the school office helping to send out letters, typing post cards, filing, and eventually helping with banking deposits.  After high school, I landed my first real job at a law office.  I was the receptionist for 7 attorneys and really enjoyed learning about law and all of the office procedures.  I began to do light bookkeeping on a ledger, and learned quickly that this is where I excelled - working with numbers!

Every day, I encounter new and exciting challenges while helping our business clients at Sommers Financial Management.  I love working with such a great team and learning about the world of investing and finances.  I look forward to watching our team grow in the coming years.  Outside of the office, my husband John and I enjoy going to the beach with our two children, Hailey and Zach.  We love to travel, and to watch cooking shows together.  We are always looking for new recipes to add to our collection.

If you had a million dollars to spend, what would be the first three things you would buy?
I would buy a small vacation home at the beach for my family and I to enjoy.  If there was any money left, I would buy two tickets to Europe and travel with my husband.

What’s the most likely place people could find you on a Saturday night?
Probably curled up on the couch watching Netflix, or reading a Stephen King book.

Which would you pick: Living on the beach or living near the mountains?
Beach!  Though the mountains are nice in the summer...

Imagine being approached by a genie who offers you three wishes. What might those wishes be?

1. Health for my family
2. A sanctuary for all the animals who don't have a home
3. Wealth so we never have to work again.

If you had the ability to travel back in time, what’s something you would tell your 18-year-old self?
To start saving money for retirement so you don't have to stress later on.

From the young age of 5, I had asked my parents for a piggy bank for my birthday.  I would put found coins and birthday money in it, and keep it hidden. I had fun playing store with my siblings and being the cashier. I always had my ears open when my parents were discussing money, paying for bills, and having jobs to pay for things we needed and wanted. I was so excited to get my first job so I could play store for real and add more to my piggy bank. I have had various jobs in different industries, and they all involved money and customer service.

My favorite job in High School, was at a bakery. Every single customer was happy to give us money, and they always walked out with a smile. I was always excited to learn what people were celebrating and how I was going to help them make it extra special. I also learned that it takes a lot of work to run a business. I knew they were doing it well, because the business was successfully passed down multiple generations. I then developed more of an interest in business management and entrepreneurship, which has helped pave the road to my today & tomorrow.

Ever since I can remember, everywhere I go, my brain encounters problem solving opportunities. My interest in math, and the curiosity of why and how things work, has lead me to learn so many incredible things. I love challenges and the reward of knowledge that comes from them. My previous job in the S.T.E.M field (oil industry), provided so many challenges and unlimited math and science opportunities, which I thrived in. I am definitely a “wonderer” and I’m really enjoying new learning opportunities with my daughters, and in my new career path with Sommers Financial.

My passion is in helping people, filling needs in my community, bringing a sense of relief via positivity to those I get to meet. I enjoy volunteering in my community. Being part of the SFM team has provided me the opportunity to use the tools I have, build onto my wealth of knowledge, and most importantly, help others. I am blessed to have an incredible team I get to learn from and with. I look forward to building relationships and strive to help each of our clients to the best of my ability, on a daily basis.

Learn More About Me

If you had a million dollars to spend, what would be the first three things you would buy?
I would pay off all my family’s debt. Save some to fund my two daughters’ college and their first home down payment. Save and invest some for retirement growth. With those three things taken care of, I would be able to work for pleasure not need, and use that money to help my favorite local charities, and plan for travel.

What’s the most likely place people could find you on a Saturday night?
Making dinner for my family, then relaxing, watching a movie. In the summer, you might find us at the racetrack or cruising along the Oregon coast. In the winter, you might find us snowboarding the slopes of Mt. Hood or visiting with family & friends.

Which would you pick: Living on the beach or living near the mountains?
I love the view of the mountains, but I would definitely pick living on the beach. I absolutely love living in Oregon. A beautiful short drive to the coast and to the mountains.

Imagine being approached by a genie who offers you three wishes. What might those wishes be?

  1. Health for my family. With health so much can be accomplished.
  2. Wealth, so that I can spend more time volunteering in my community.
  3. I’ve always wished I could fly.

If you had the ability to travel back in time, what’s something you would tell your 18-year-old self?
Don’t be afraid to take opportunities; some are only offered once in a lifetime.
