My passion for investing and financial planning all began in high school when my dad began to share about how he was investing for me for college. Then, after reading an article about Michael Dell beginning Dell Computer from his dorm room at the University of Texas, I began my first investment partnership as a freshman at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon - collecting investments from friends and family, and modeling my "fund" after Warren Buffet's initial partnership.
After working at an accounting software firm, and trying my hand as a full-charge accountant, I decided to leave the accounting world and begin my own financial planning and investment practice in 2002. As my business grew, I had side-hustles like teaching at local colleges, as well as selling insurance. I was also fortunate to have a supportive wife that had a solid income and benefit package as a public school teacher.
Every day, I learn, read, listen, and find new ways to better serve our clients. And with a team that shares the same values and vision as I do, I have no doubt Sommers Financial Management will continue to grow and make a real difference in our communities. Outside of work, my wife, Teresa, and I enjoy reading, traveling, and hiking with our two children. In 2019-20, the four of us attempted to see the entire United States in our truck and 30-foot travel trailer, only to get derailed by the COVID-19 outbreak. We plan to explore those last few states in the near future - and then to travel internationally to experience and learn about other cultures.

What’s the most likely place people could find you on a Saturday night?
At my friend Mark's house, playing $20 poker and drinking bourbon with a bunch of good dudes.
Which would you pick: Living on the beach or living near the mountains?
I'd love to have a house in Hawaii, but think that we are very blessed to live in Catalina Foothills area of Tucson in the winter, and near the Oregon/Washington Cascades and coast range each summer.
Imagine being approached by a genie who offers you three wishes. What might those wishes be?
- To be able to eat anything and still feel/look good.
- For my family and I to live long, healthy lives.
- To be able to provide high investment returns to my clients, with zero volatility and risk.
If you had the ability to travel back in time, what’s something you would tell your 18-year-old self?
Enjoy your youth - there is plenty of time to work and make money.
